Young Composer of Dyfed Competition

Once again GCSE and A Level Music pupils have excelled in the three counties composition competition. Callum Newman, Emily Husnjak, Rowan Thomas, Florence Gunn-Wilson, Owen Topham, Katie Jones and Hari Thomas have all submitted pieces and had them work shopped by professional ensemble The Hermes Experiment. This gave our young composers the opportunity to hear their pieces being performed live, rather than on a computer, and to discuss the finer points of vocal and instrumental writing with top composers and performers. The recordings from these workshops will now be used as part of the pupils’ controlled assessment portfolios.
Florence Gunn-Wilson, Katie Jones and Hari Thomas’ pieces were also selected to be performed in the finalists’ concert at Rhosygilwen. This is a huge achievement as there were over 80 compositions submitted by pupils from across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire, as well as from Dyfed residents currently studying Music at university. This brilliant opportunity could lead to our pupils going on to become professional composers in their future careers.
