In March the A Level Biology group visited Techniquest in Cardiff to take part in a DNA “photocopying workshop. First, the pupils had to extract their own DNA, then using a series of chemical reactions and robotic equipment make millions of copies of their DNA. The products were then cut into smaller fragments using special enzymes and separated using gel-electrophoresis. In the end the pupils were able to identify whether they were homozygous dominant, heterozygous dominant or homozygous recessive for a certain gene.
The day was a great success, with the majority of pupils getting clearly identifiable results.
