On Friday 26th October a number of Year 12 students attended the regional Seren Hub launch event at Parc Y Scarlets. Each student is selected based on their academic achievements at GCSE level. Seren is a network of regional hubs designed to support Wales’ brightest sixth formers achieve their academic potential and gain access to leading universities. The Network will:
- inspire students about future career aspirations
- stretch and challenge students in the subjects they enjoy
- link students with leading UK universities
- provide hands-on support and advice in preparation for university application
- supports schools and teachers in providing the best information, advice and activities for their high achieving students
Each Seren hub are active partnerships of schools and FE colleges, supported by local government, Welsh Government and leading universities. The partners work together, sharing resources and experience, to develop a programme of support for high achievers across the region.
The students from Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn joined other sixth formers from across Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire in attending workshops on a variety of subjects from Medicine to Creative Writing. They were also given an insight into the network from Tom Long a student at Haverfordwest High school who participated in the scheme last year and got the opportunity to attend Yale University during the summer. He encouraged all in attendance to consider their future aspirations, take every opportunity offered by the network and most importantly aim high. Other keynote speakers included Stephen Thorton from Valero who talked about aspirations and graduate employment along with Mike Nicholson, Head of Admissions at Bath University, who emphasised the benefits of Seren and Elite universities.
