In September three sixth form students from Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn were selected to represent Wales at the World Karate Championships in Lisbon, Portugal. They were Owen Topham, Lily Rees and Connor Rees. This was Connor’s first time representing his country at this level and sadly it didn’t go to plan as he was knocked out in his first fight by his Russian opponent. Suffering from severe concussion Connor was unable to take any further part in the event. Owen put on a good performance against opponents from America and Russia. However, he was also side-lined on the first day with a broken nose cutting his tournament short. Wales went on to achieve 4th in the team kumite narrowly losing 2-1 to the gold medallists Russia. Lily had a more successful tournament and was rewarded for her hard efforts by placing 3rd in the female team event. Lily was extremely proud to receive her first ever international medal. Let’s hope it’s the first of many! All three students had an amazing experience and are back in training preparing for future competitions. Da iawn bawb!
