Additional Learning Needs Department

At Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn one of our many visions is to value and treat all pupils equally and educate each one to his or her potential. Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn “provides a high level of sensitive and caring provision for pupils with additional learning needs (Estyn, 2018).”

The Additional Needs Department works with all members of school staff to promote the development and inclusivity of pupils with ALN. The department, under the leadership of the Additional Learning Needs Co-ordinator (ALNCo-Mrs Samantha Connolly) aims to promote learning strategies and teaching approaches which allow additional needs to be met.  We aim to provide a broad and appropriate curriculum, from differentiated work in the classroom, in class support, intervention lessons, and wellbeing support in our nurture centre. In addition, an alternative curriculum balanced with external provision, for example work experience, Lego Therapy, John Muir award is offered to meet the needs of some individuals. Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn strives to offer a fully inclusive and nurturing ethos.

The addition needs of learners are categorised as follows:

School Action (SA)

School Action Plus (SAP)

Statemented of Educational Need

The department work with external agencies to support those pupils categorised as SAP. Some of these agencies include, Team around the family, Child and adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), Speech and Language Therapy, Education Child Psychology and many more.
