Holocaust Memorial Event 2020

“It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.”

Representing Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn at a key stage 4 Holocaust Memorial County Conference were Chantal Morris, Cerys Lloyd and Luke James of Year 11.  Learning lessons from the past, including hearing the personal testimony of Holocaust survivor Eva Clarke, the three pupils were given opportunities to help shape a safer and better future.  Following a question and answer session with Eva Clarke the pupils were able to collaborate with pupils from other county secondary schools – here they responded to a ‘Pyramid of Hatred’ where they identified attributes and actions linked to prejudice and discrimination. They also expressed their feelings through creative artwork in response to the poem ‘ The Butterfly’ by Pavel Friedmann – a symbolic commentary of the Second World War and its associated horrors. Discussion and evaluation regarding bringing a message of hope and a ray of light into a world where darkness prevails brought proceedings to a close.  The day was a very emotional and powerful one with ITV Wales News broadcasting the conference.
