For the first time ever, the opening round of action from the National Netball Super league saw all eight teams do battle over four matches at one venue. Super Saturday as it was called, took place on Saturday 30th January at the Genting Arena, Birmingham and pupils from Emlyn found themselves taking in all the live action as it unfolded.
The action started at 2pm with last year’s runners-up Hertfordshire Mavericks comfortably beating the only Welsh team in the league, Celtic Dragons. Two hours later Yorkshire Jets tackled a victorious Loughborough Lightning, with Dan Ryan taking charge of Manchester Thunder for the first time and beating Team Northumbria at 6pm. Reigning Champions Surrey Storm finished off the day with a mouth-watering match-up against Team Bath, with this game being the most closely contested of all the matches leaving spectators gripping their seats in a nail biting last quarter, in which Team Bath proved too strong for Storm.
After taking in all the atmosphere and fun of the day it was back to the hotel for a well-earned rest, not before a tour of Birmingham in the minibus and a successful attempt to find a well-known fast food outlet for our evening meal!
The following morning we headed to the shops at the infamous Bull Ring shopping centre, before an entertaining journey back along the M6 with the Year 10’s getting very competitive over the passengers in the cars going by. Eventually we returned to Wales and Newcastle Emlyn after a fun filled weekend and the pleasure of seeing the best netball players perform at the highest level, let’s hope we can match them in our future fixtures!
