Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn recently hosted Miss Daisy Seabourne, Lifelong Learning Policy Team Manager from the Welsh Local Government Association and Mr Aeron Rees, Carmarthenshire Director of Learning. They came to see the activities being undertaken in the school to support Literacy and specifically the Reading focus day held on Friday 5th February and led by Miss McCarthy-Keane. Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn has undertaken two events this school year to promote student’s literacy skills, No Pens Wednesday which promoted listening and oral communication skills and the Reading day which encouraged students to focus on using advanced reading skills and strategies to support learning in lessons. Miss Seabourne and Mr Rees met with the school literacy co-ordinator, Miss McCarthy-Keane and the Headteacher before having a tour of the school led by Lucy Jenkins, Head Girl and Lucy Dobson, Deputy Head Girl. They were able to visit lessons and see first hand how students were using their reading skills to support their learning as well as to meet students who have had work published on the intenational Pobl website which shares work with schools across the world.
Miss Seabourne led the team from Wales invited by the National Foundation for Educational Research which attended the Global Learning conference in Washington D.C. in November 2015. Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn were also invited to attend and Mr Seamus O’Sullivan was the only UK school leader to deliver a workshop on reading strategies to the delegates.
