On Thursday the 8th of June 12 pupils from years 7 and 8 headed to Cardiff University to take part in the Launch Day for the Brilliant Club’s Scholars Program. The Program allows some of our more able and talented pupils the opportunity to achieve a qualification that will give them a taster of what university has to offer and what potential courses/career paths they could undertake if they decide upon higher education.

On the day the pupils were introduced to the Program as well as meeting with their PhD Tutor Alice who will be guiding them through the course. The pupils took part in a study skills session in the morning before having a tutor session with Alice in the afternoon. Cardiff University Student Ambassadors then gave the pupils a tour of part of the campus, showing them the various lecture theatres and the students union.

Over the next month Alice will be visiting the school to deliver 4 tutor sessions to the group, which will result in them completing a 1,500 word assignment in July. The title for the project is ‘Understanding Viral Infections: Is Ebola the Next International Pandemic?’  On completion of the Scholars Program the pupils will have a celebratory graduation ceremony at Swansea University in September.

The pupils thoroughly enjoyed their day at Cardiff University and are very excited to begin the Scholars Program at Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn. We wish them all the very best.
